Wireless N Router - the Best Skype Router
If you are in the market for a new router should you:
(a) Get a Wireless N router - Draft 2.0 now?
(b) Stick with 802.11g technology because Wireless N is still a "Draft" specification.
(c) Do nothing and wait for the final N specification to get signed off by IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)?
The IEEE has dragged out acceptance of the final "N" spec. for years. It's a committee and we all know what that means. "Analysis - Paralysis."
The boys are currently saying that a final decision will pop out in 2009-10, but last year it was '08 and the year before that it was '07 .... It's a raffle. Pick a number and take your chances.
What's the answer to the question? We think it's a no brainer. Wireless N routers are a great improvement over 802.11g routers it's insanity to wait for the IEEE to finally put a stamp of approval on a specification. Even the engineers now tell us "N Draft 2.0 is a stable foundation for a commercial product." That was obviously good enough for Apple.
Wireless N Belkin routers have been available for years. The latest Draft 2.0 Belkin wireless routers are stunning. Anyone who runs multi-media applications, concurrent VoIP, or is looking for a robust long range wireless router should upgrade immediately.
Potentially an N router has twice the range of a "G" and five times the throughput. The word "potentially" is always a red flag, but we experienced a dramatic improvement. There were also also qualitative enhancements. We could hardly believe the impact on the usability of Skype. The ultimate Skype router has to be Wireless N.
Until the final version of the N specification is signed off, neither the IEEE nor the WiFi Alliance will make any commitment on compatibility with Draft 2.0. That's understandable, but does it mean you should wait? We don't think so, it's in the interest of all manufacturers to provide software upgrades or forego repeat business from existing customers and incur damage to their brand.
