The WiFi SIP Phone - not just any WiFi Phone

Looking for a WiFi phone, but not sure which model to pick?

TIP: Only consider WiFi SIP phone options.

What is SIP?

The WiFi phone feature in greatest demand is "single number - single device" access to converged services.

The SIP protocol permits multiple devices to be registered using the same address or phone number. It means that a call to the one number will find the user at home, the office or a wireless hot spot. It doesn't matter whether they are using a smartphone, cell phone, desktop phone or whatever they will be contactable on the one number. Furthermore as SIP supports text and multi-media options as well voice it means that communication can be rich and appropriate.

Convergent multi-media services are are the driver behind WiFi phone adoption.

IMS (IP Multimedia subsystem) is the architecture that will eventually deliver IP multimedia to the handset. IMS employs SIP to achieve Internet integration.

The dual-mode WiFi phone is the key to accessing substantial cost savings. They permit expensive long distance cellular calls to be transferred to free or near-free VoiP connections. Ultimately it will be possible to roam seamlessly between WiFi and cellular connections without interruption. The technology is available and when the service providers are ready they will roll it out.

Carriers and service providers are transforming themselves into integrated multimedia service providers. In the near future the bulk of their revenue will have to come from charging for content and data. As WiFi and SIP technologies become pervasive the carriers will need to pursue these new revenue streams more aggressively because voice traffic will rapidly decline as a significant contributor to their bottom lines.
