Skype Cell Phone - the Next Generation

At last a serious Skype cell phone is in prospect . It's been a long time coming, but Skype has finally partnered-up with two main stream cell phone manufacturers. Both Nokia and Sony Ericsson have dropped the word. They will be packaging Skype with "some' of their phones. In the case of Nokia it will be available on the N series N97 smartphone in the 3Q '09.

Cell phone carriers will obviously not greet this news with great enthusiasm. It's going to up-set their revenue models. There's still money in it for them, as the "free" Skype calls need to be transported over their 3G and wireless networks. No doubt the specifics of how they will clip the ticket of callers using Skype users will emerge once the phones become available.

In fact the cell phone companies have no choice but to play ball. In the same way as VoIP was responsible for slashing the cost of fixed line calls, it will eventually have a similar impact on our cell phone bills.

It's a tricky act for Nokia and friends, as they rely on the cell phone companies to sell their phones and the carriers have options. They are well practiced at playing off phone manufacturers against one another. Think back to the Blackberry Storm and ponder why it was released without WiFi.

We would next like to see a serious Skype router i.e. one that's manufactured embedded Skype. Skype 24/7 with no computer required. Yes!
