What are SIP Trunks?SIP trunks are a service offered by ITSP's (Internet Telephony Service Providers) to extend the range of real-time IP based communications services (including voice) beyond the enterprise LAN to the Internet. In so doing the requirement for dedicated circuits, T1/E1 trunks and PSTN gateways is eliminated. It is a technology that moves business phone communication from the PSTN to the Internet. A SIP trunk is a software based IP service. There is no CPE (customer premise equipment) involved. They are inexpensive, cheap to maintain and deliver a rapid return on investment. SIP software employs the SIP protocol, which is now recognized as the standard for VoIP communications. It works as well over the Internet as on a LAN and can initiate not just voice communication, but other types of real-time communication including: video conferencing, IM, Presence and White-boarding. A key benefit of SIP trunking is to enrich business communications and in so doing smooth out the hurdles associated with geography and time zones that impair business productivity. For example, the SIP protocol enables the registration of remote, mobile and hand held devices with a central VoIP PBX to create a domain that can be transparently shared irrespective of location or time of day. An employee can register multiple devices with a single number or address. The devices may include: SIP phones, SIP softphones, IP phones, WiFi SIP phones or mobile phones with dual cellular and WiFi capabilities. It means that an employee can stay in contact with customers and fellow employees no matter where they are. As the VoIP PBX phone system becomes increasingly pervasive the possibilities for applying SIP technology also increase. A single VoIP PBX can become the hub of a multi-site enterprise that enables customers, employees and partners to communicate freely without a requirement for PSTN connectivity.
