The ideal solution is a compact and rugged wind up charger, that will do more than simply top up a cell phone. We looked at most of the options, but with one exception they were all flimsy and poorly manufactured. They wouldn't survive a camping trip, let alone a natural disaster.
The stand out exception is the Microlink ARC FR360R.
It's not just a portable cell phone charger with a hand crank. It's also a portable solar charger. The ARC FR360R combines an AM/FM radio, flash light and cell phone charger in a ruggedized housing with a footprint barely larger than a dollar bill.
While it's tempting to use an FR150's radio, torch and universal phone charger on a daily basis, it's also a good idea to pack one away in a cupboard or car trunk for emergencies.
