Cisco VoIP PBX

It's clear that Cisco doesn't approve of the term Cisco VoIP PBX. Cisco prefers the term IP telephony. The term PBX having a history of association with circuit switched networks, while IP telephony implies a vertical application that's more than simply a replacement for a phone system. The source of our knowledge is the publication by ciscopress.com called 'The Road to IP Telephony: how Cisco Systems Migrated From PBX to IP Telephony" by Stephanie L. Carhee.

"Cisco VoIP PBX" - we know what it means but it's not accurate.

The publication is described as "A complete IP Telephony migration planning guide" and that it is. The author details her experience in project managing the roll out of the first enterprise VoIP PBX system. I mean enterprise IP telephony system. The deployment was at Cisco's San Jose, California Campus. It began in October 2000 and involved 20,000 users spread out across 55 buildings over a 2 mile radius. In subsequent stages of the project Cisco employees world wide were migrated across to Cisco's IP telephony platform. The company is obviously a big user of its own technology.

Cisco is a visionary enterprise. It's not encumbered by the constraints of old world concepts. The term IP telephony is not an alternative expression for business phone systems. It's a collection of applications designed to increase workgroup and personal productivity that also includes voice communication.

Cisco CallManager or as it is now known Cisco Unified Communications Manager is the software based call-processing component of the Cisco IP telephony solution. It extends enterprise telephony features to packet telephony network devices including: IP phones, media processing devices, VoIP gateways and multi-media applications. These applications are hosted on proprietary servers: Cisco Media Convergence Server (MCS) 7800 series and Cisco Integrated Communications System (ICS) 7750.
