Best Cordless Telephone Shortlist
Uniden v. Panasonic Cordless Telephones
The starting point for selecting the best cordless telephone is to narrow the search to the best cordless phone brands. Both Panasonic and Uniden telephones are manufactured to very high standards. These companies also offer an extensive range of models that address just about every requirement.
Cordless Phone Comparison
To select the right cordless phone you need to specify:
1. One line or a multi line phone system?
2. If the answer is multi line phone system - how many lines: 2, 3 or 4 line phone system?
3. Expandable or not - how many handsets are required today and in the future?
4. Is the phone for home or business use?
5. Is your home or office - small, large, multi level, solid walls, large obstructions ... ?
6. Is a long range cordless phone required?
The answers to these questions will narrow the search to those phones with the most appropriate cordless phone frequencies.
The search can be further narrowed if there are special requirements:
Uniden cordless phones are usually the best answer to these special requirements. The company is a cordless phone specialist and manufactures a vast range of models to address niche requirements.
DECT 6.0 Phones
DECT 6.0 cordless phones are the best option when a single line is adequate. DECT 6.0 technology delivers excellent range, talk time, stand-by time and freedom from interference. The DECT 1.9 GHz frequency is dedicated to cordless phones and as a result there is no possibility of interference from the usual suspects: WiFi, baby monitors, microwave ovens and bluetooth.
As DECT 6.0 is a standard, it means there are few if any differences between brands resulting from how they implement the technology. Differences between the brands come down to how well their phones are designed and manufactured. Uniden
and Panasonic
consistently produce products that top DECT phone reviews.
Cordless Phone Range
DECT can achieve a range of between 300 and 450 meters in an open field. In a more practical situation where the base station is located within a building, a range of 50-60 meters is an achievable expectation. To get beyond that you may need to look at a 900 MHz option.
The lower the frequency the greater the range.
Multi Line Telephones
If a multi line phone system is required the best cordless telephone is probably not a DECT 6.0 phone. Two line DECT phones are becoming more common, but 3 and 4 line DECT phones are very rare. Generally 5.8 GHz cordless phones are the best multi line solutions. Freedom from interference is comparable, but we would only recommend Panasonic or Uniden 5.8 GHz phones.
The limitations of 5.8 phones are mainly apparent in buildings with solid brick or stone walls, but large solid obstructions will challenge any cordless phone system.
With the exception of DECT 6.0, cordless phones frequencies are subject to proprietary vagaries resulting from how well they are implemented. As a result some brands of 5.8 GHz phones are excellent and others aren't. Uniden and Panasonic cordless telephones are consistent winners i.e. the best 2 line phone KX-TG6702B and the best 4 line phone KX-TG4500B.
Uniden manufactures an extensive range of 2 line cordless phone systems for the home office or busy household: Uniden TRU9466.
Expandable
Finally, the best cordless telephone is usually the one that can be can be expanded to meet future contingencies. In cordless phone lingo, expandable phones are those that can support additional handsets.
